Birmingham: Bordesley Green, Kingstanding, Shard End

(The projects are always expanding so these areas may change)

Overall Purpose:

To help the Project Coordinators support residents’ groups on The Beautiful Boroughs and Beautiful Birmingham Projects in establishing and running community litter-picking groups.

Main duties and responsibilities:

Community cleanup events are usually organised on Saturdays and Sundays (but some jobs may be mid week also), normally for up to 2 hours of litter-picking and can be in the morning or in the afternoon, depending on the requirements of the community group. We anticipate that attendance at each cleanup will take the Event Support Assistant up to 4 hours : 1 hour to travel to the cleanup (collecting the kit from the store on the way), 2 hours at the cleanup and 1 hour to return the kit and travel home

  • On the day of the litter-pick, collect the litter-picking kit from our central store or kit could be stored at your home if you have the space.

  • Be at the site in time to meet and greet the residents in conjunction with the group’s coordinator

Then, working closely with the group’s coordinator:

  • Ensure everybody signs in and is given the correct kit

  • Inform all participants of correct health & safety procedure and any risks they should be aware of, plus procedures to follow if necessary

  • Make sure that the event runs smoothly by ensuring that the volunteers have enough rubbish bags. It is also important to make sure the filled bags are left at the correct collection point (you will be advised of this prior to the event)

  • Gather everyone up for refreshments at the end and to collect the kit back in. This is an opportunity to check in with all the participants and with the group coordinator and to arrange the time and date for another event

  • It is important that the Event Support Assistant takes photos for use by CleanupUK throughout the event. Note: “Before and After” photos and photos of the people involved are especially useful. CleanupUK does have Photo Permission Forms which parents/guardians need to complete for participants under 16 years old

  • Sometimes we need volunteers or passers by to complete evaluation forms after the event. On these occasions we would need you to distribute these and encourage people to fill them in

  • At the end of the event, gather up the equipment and return it to the CleanupUK central store

We are looking for people who possess some or all of the following characteristics:

CleanupUK will provide all the training and advice that you need to carry out this role and we would require you to shadow one of the Project Coordinators for an agreed length of time before taking on the supervision of such an event yourself

Out-of-pocket expenses will be paid upon presentation of receipts and a claim form, including reimbursement of travel costs between home and work locations
