We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Lindsay White, the leader behind Community Supporters in Bexhill and now one of CleanupUK’s Cleanup Champions.

Community Supporters, the Bexhill-on-Sea based environmental education charity founded by Lindsay, is already a busy space where education, creativity, and community spirit come together. From youth programmes and craft workshops to gardening and even beach safety sessions, the hub gives people of all ages the chance to connect, learn new skills, and feel proud of where they live.

When Lindsay heard about CleanupUK, through a poster in her area, she knew it was the perfect opportunity to strengthen what she was already doing. With litter picking kits provided by CleanupUK, Community Supporters quickly became an official Cleanup Hub, encouraging neighbours to come together to keep their local areas clean and cared for.

For Lindsay, it’s about much more than just removing rubbish. “Litter picking isn’t just about cleaning up, it’s about connecting people, making them feel as though they are a part of their community and showing that small actions can add up to something big,” she explained.

From beaches to parks, people in Bexhill are pitching in with litter pickers to help keep our shared spaces looking their best. Young people, adults, and families all take part, often turning a simple litter pick into a fun, social activity.

Creative ways to protect the environment

One of Lindsay’s most imaginative initiatives has been her Beach Pirate activities. Children and families were invited to imagine themselves as shipwrecked pirates, exploring the shoreline while learning about safe foraging, the dangers of sinking sand and even practicing SOS signals with semaphore. By blending creativity with education, Lindsay made environmental awareness exciting and memorable—while weaving in litter picking as part of the adventure.

This approach also tied in perfectly with CleanupUK’s #ProtectOurWaterways campaign, which encourages communities to take action against litter in coastal areas, rivers, and canals. By showing young people that caring for the sea and beaches could be fun, Lindsay inspired a new generation to get involved in keeping waterways clean and safe for wildlife.

Lindsay’s dedication and passion have made her the natural choice to become a Cleanup Champion for Bexhill. In this new role, she’s not only leading her own hub but also supporting other local hubs to thrive. She shares ideas, inspires new volunteers and helps spread the message that caring for our environment brings people together.

Her journey to this point has been just as inspiring. A former photographer and single parent, Lindsay always looks for ways to give back to her community. Through charity work, environmental studies, and her love of bringing people together, she has built Community Supporters into a place full of opportunity. Now, as a Cleanup Champion, she’s taking that commitment even further.

Bexhill may be smaller than some of its neighbouring towns, but Lindsay sees huge potential here. Working with partners like Southern Water, local councils, and community groups. She’s helping build a culture of pride and action that will last.

With more litter picks and community projects planned, Lindsay’s message is clear: keeping Bexhill clean is something everyone can be part of. And thanks to her leadership as a Cleanup Champion, the future for this seaside town looks brighter than ever.
