Upper Icknield Way

Pitstone & Ivinghoe,LU7 9FG

16 Oct 2019

23:00

Where safe to do so, litter collection along the verges of the B489 Upper Icknield Way between Ivinghoe and the junction with the Westfield Road roundabout. Start time will be 12pm midday on the green area outside Pitstone Quarry. AVDC will be collecting all of our bags of litter the following day from the quarry green area. Eleven bags of litter collected over a period of 3.5 hours and over a distance of only 300 - 350 metres. Clearly, the intention to work all the way round to Ivinghoe was unrealistic. It is evident that these verges haven't been cleared for years and with the risk presented by passing traffic a thorough and safe clean up could only be undertaken if the road was closed to traffic and it is unlikely that will ever happen. Stuff had been there so long that nature was growing around and over it and clearly a lot of litter would have been missed for this reason. Occasionally a crunch revealed a bottle or can underfoot, but then it was often a challenge to remove it.

One driver beeped his horn and gave a thumbs up. If time permits tomorrow, will do some more before the AVDC contractors come to collect the bags of waste..

Village Action Litter Busters
We are part of the Frampton Cotterell and Coalpit Heath Village Action initiative. We aim to co-ordinate the efforts of local people in promoting awareness of the problem of litter; improving attitudes; and taking part in monthly organised litter picking, with the aim of keeping our villages pleasant and pretty. We know that many residents look after the roadsides and paths adjacent to their own homes and wish to encourage this. Some of our members carry chalk to mark dog fouling on pavements, to help people avoid stepping in it and to tell irresponsible dog owners that they should be clearing up after their pet. Litter picking can be very rewarding, and is an opportunity to get out and make new contacts in the village. Please get in touch if you can help in any way, however small. Please email us if there is any particular area in the village over which you have concerns about litter. In 2012 Nisa - Village Roots in Woodend Road gave us some funds and we have bought some hi-viz vests with 'Volunteer - Village Action Litter Busters' printed on them. We are grateful for their continuing support. South Glos Council support us with sacks, picker sticks and bag hoops. See Upcoming Events for dates and meeting points for monthly litter picks. Please see our gallery below for some pictures of our members, including two younger litter busters!

Saltwells Clean & Green
We aim to clean up and maintain an urban nature reserve and ancient woodland right in the heart of a built up industrial area. Saltwells Woods and nature reserve is well used and well loved, and was recently saved from having a housing estate built on it, but sadly also neglected. With a renewed vigour now the woods are saved, we vow to make the area as CLEAN & GREEN as we possibly can.

Coventry Canal
I am an individual who walks part of the Coventry canal to and from work everyday. I have only been walking along the canal since October 2017 despite being a Coventrian my entire life! It is the city's best kept secret and so peaceful and calm away from crowds and cars. But it makes me angry and sad to see such a beautiful habitat ruined with litter so I started picking litter! I usually pick on my way to/from work in the week but I plan to do more at the weekends and travel further to notoriously messy parts of the canal. If anyone would care to join me to make a difference and tidy up for the animals and all of us to enjoy, please get in touch :) Thank you, Jennysha P.S. There is now a new Canal & River Trust Towpath Taskforce which runs on Thursday mornings - please see CRT website for more info. Give as much or as little time as you can :) Please report any flytipping via: 1) website: fixmystreet.com 2) email: enquiries.westmidlands@canalrivertrust.org.uk
