Litter picking equipment

So, you’ve decided to start litter picking – awesome! Now, you need to think about the kit you’re going to need to get going. Whether litter picking alone or in a group, having the right equipment will help you have a safe and fun clean-up. If you’re a Cleanup Hub or a local organisation that wants to become one, we’re able to provide free equipment in some instances. Just get in touch.  

Our litter picking kit recommendations

The things you need 

• A hand-held litter-picker
• Bin bags (some councils provide these)  
• Bags for recyclables (depending on what your council recycles)
• Gloves
• A high visibility vest 

Not essential, but handy

• A mobile phone for emergencies and taking pictures
• A first aid kit
• Some hand sanitiser
• A hoop or something to keep your rubbish bags open
• A cart or trolley to carry equipment
• A long-handled litter-picker
• Tea and cake!  

Getting your equipment

Your local council aka the free stuff  

If your local council supports volunteer litter pickers, you’re in luck! They sometimes provide equipment, but you’ll never know unless you ask.  Some councils also supply special bin bags for volunteer litter collections; sometimes they’re badged for collection by the street cleansing service. 

Buying stuff  

If you litter pick regularly or prefer the litter picker you like to use, you might want to buy it. We have another guide to help secure funding which can be helpful to pay for things like equipment.
