Many groups don’t consider public liability insurance an issue for them. Some groups take the view that volunteers are personally responsible for their own liability, others get their members to sign a disclaimer.
Unsure what to do?
Ask your local authority if they can help. They may well be able to cover you under their own public liability insurance.
Some organisations offer free or low cost insurance to their members. For example: Canal & Rivers Trust, Keep Britain Tidy’s Litter Hero Programme, Neighbourhood Watch.
Whilst having your own insurance would provide the best protection, it can be costly. These companies specialise in charity insurance and can provide quotes to help you make a decision.
